Exploring the concept of place in the literature on smallholder farmers and climate change adaptation in Sub-Saharan Africa

This critical review paper expands on the meaning of place. It opens a new narrative how geographic concept place is conceptualized in smallholder farmers and climate change adaptation literature Sub-Saharan Africa. The suggested that not only ‘where’ location but geographically connected interdependent to illustrate farmers’ experiences adapting shocks interact with global efforts such as improving food security, eliminating poverty building sustainable rural livelihood. Through various strategies exhibited by different farmer groups, demonstrated people places have agency make choices control their destinies irrespective whatever force overwhelms them. argues sense expressed through ecological shapes people’s intuition, beliefs, actions illustrated smallholders’ perception determinant barriers effective strategies. also influences ‘glocalization’ impact agroecological-based livelihoods at locations maladaptive outcomes are perceived. Place gives identity (re)shaping vice versa. There an undeviating relationship between power, experience. Further exploration lifeworld experiences, people, power central understanding interaction.
